EXPOSED!
Gov. Seriake Dickson has concluded all plans to PRIVATIZE the only state-owned Niger Delta University by the next academic session. This was confirmed in the bayelsa students leaders meeting with the Students Management Committee on the 18th of June 2016 at Due Process Building, Yenagoa.
Recall that the governor described NDU as “unproductive” in his media chat. Thus, in order to make the school “productive” the governor has decided to grant “Partial Autonomy” to NDU by giving only “Subventions”. This means that NDU will have to generate fund to pay its workers while the government will only give little assistance alone.
The impact of this policy on the students community is as follows:
1. All students will pay higher school fees ranging from N100,000 lowest for non sciences while those in sciences will pay up to N150,000 to N200,000 and ABOVE per academic session.
2. The government will transfer its burden of salary payments and workers welfare to the students. This will increase the rate and cost of “Sorting” and other financial exploitation in the school.
3. As a result of high school fees, most students will dropout of school because even their parents who are civil servants don’t receive their “little” salary regularly.
4. The future generation and the ijaw man can no longer have access to affordable education. This is the beginning of our backwardness and suffering. If this new policy is the so called “Declaration of a State of Emergency on Education” then bayelsans are in a critical state of emergency indeed.
